Johnny Hunter is the story of a young Cheyenne Indian set in the 1970s on a Montana Reservation. Johnny is in the eighth grade at the Catholic school and a good student and very good basketball player. His dream is to win a college scholarship someday and eventually make life better for his parents. However, there is a strong conflict in his life as his father has disowned the Cheyenne lifestyle, and his grandfather, Gray Man, wants Johnny to be raised with traditional tribal beliefs.

Johnny Hunter has to face many struggles as he tries to find the best path in the modern world for him and his family.
