Lady Ramillia Winmoore has always suffered from gaps in her memory. When she awakens strapped to an examining table at the West Freeman Asylum for Lunatics, she learns she has lost ten months to the darkness. And that she is responsible for the gruesome murder of her parents.
When salvation arrives in the form of a benefactor named Sir Julian Lawrence, he helps her gain freedom. But appearances are deceiving and soon Ramillia understands the cost of her freedom when she’s inducted into a society of blood-thirsty, cruel immortals.
It is obvious that the author did quite some reading about the time period in which the story takes place as the little details are believable and create a coherent world. It's a joy to read the descriptions because clearly Natalie Gibson put care and attention into everything – from the characters to their dresses and their surroundings. Sometimes the descriptions of actions in the book can be quite disturbing but in a rather delightful way (if that's not too strange to say!). The story moves from one point to the next fluidly, and keeps you interested in what will happen next. The story isn't predictable and is very entertaining.
