It is said that the nine city-state citadels of the Banthyk Union are the most formidable holds on all of Xarh. With towering walls featuring overhead walkways as thick as Earth’s highways, the cover of darkness for all but precious few moments of a given day, and the backing of a strong people of never-ending pride and stubborn fortitude, there are few who would dispute that claim. The swamps on the continent of Banthyk provide a pitiless environment and an endless array of ways to slow would-be attackers who dare venture towards the citadels on foot, and the skies are protected by heavy ballista known as Skyflang. It’s a combination that has served the soldiers of the swamp region well for many years, and, with the truce and subsequent easing of all hostilities with their enemies from the north, the citadels are more than capable of providing protection against other outside forces of aggression. There is one problem the city-states have yet to solve within their mighty towers and miles of fortifications, however, and that is the internal power of the criminal element within.
When control is the coin of the realm, those who seek it will go to great lengths to be among the gifted few. And others will undermine it with the intent of creating another form of manipulation. It is a rare Banthyk-born individual who possesses both goals, and legends are built upon such mysterious personalities. Darkness becomes their friend at an early age, and some never let it go. When the individual becomes the conductor of defiant souls, a foul song evolves.
Jaliun strikes such a chord.
