Chicago: 1847. I&M Canal gravedigger, Enda Hughes buries a hanged man on Suicide Hill. A priest dies of a sudden heart attack.
Only Ojibwa god, Ghost Rabbit has seen everything. A curse is found on Keepatau’s church door from a stranger claiming he was denied alms. He says his life will be a 'stel parad', a numb parade of days.
It isn't long before the canal foreman alerts Enda to an order of phantom monks wandering the cemetery. A blizzard swallows the night and Enda has a terrible dream. The judge’s vile sentry, skilled in the ways of the wyse, makes his proposal and has already begun her apothecary husband’s downfall.
Together, the Hughes’ and encamping tribe must use their medicine and magic as a barrier to save themselves from the unholiest of brotherhoods.
