Northern Light
Description
College instructor Laurel and her more social friend Claire have been best friends since high school. After Laurel divorces her philandering husband David, she comes to stay with Claire, whose husband George died soon after he retired and he and Claire moved to an old house on the North Branch of the Au Sable River. Claire has made new friends, and Laurel is expecting her daughter, Jen, to visit, so both have high expectations of the time they will share.

When the two are touring the area, a raven with a hurt wing is shoved into Claire’s house and left to create havoc. An anonymous note warns Claire to move. There are respites from increasing tension. The raven, Oscar, heals; Claire’s cat Black Pearl and other animals relieve stress, as do shared food and spirits and the surroundings, which include cedar trees and sweet fern and sinuous creeks and rivers. However, injuries and deaths prove someone hates Claire enough to kill without qualms.

Claire begins what she expects to be a brief affair with Charles, an eccentric ornithologist whose cabin seems to provide a haven from stress. Laurel finds herself involved with the brusque detective Arnie, who, at first without much tact, is investigating the case. The central question, who hates Claire enough to kill her, evolves by the end of the book to be, how will that hate, and resulting relationships transform lives?
